XXIII Model of the General Assembly of the Organization of American States opened in Santo Domingo
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, March 5, 2006.

Dominican Republic hosted the XXIII Model of the General Assembly of the Organization of American States, an event in which more than 300 college students from the hemisphere simulated the work of the OAS General Assembly Annual Meeting, this year to be celebrated in early June at La Romana, Dominican Republic.

During the opening event that took place at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD for its Spanish initials,) President Fernández and OAS Secretary General José Miguel Insulza shared similar messages and perspectives on democratic values and other issues as human rights violations, social inequality and crime affecting the whole Hemisphere.

On the following days the participating students were exposed to the process of proposing resolutions, addressing regional conflicts, peacekeeping, human rights, women and children issues, economic and social development and the environment, representing the different member countries of the Organization through the different governing bodies of the OAS and its five commissions, General and Plenary Commission, Legal Department, Economic and Social Issues, Education, Science and Culture, and Budget and Administrative Commission. This project, coordinated and led by the United Nations Association of the Dominican Republic in close collaboration with the Organization of American States, was held at the Jaragua Hotel of Santo Domingo.

This event was the result of the continuing commitment and support of FUNGLODE/GFDD to the purpose of the OAS and its programs. To this end, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the President of the Dominican Republic, Leonel Fernandez, the OAS Secretary General, José Miguel Insulza, the Executive Director of Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD), Natasha Despotovic, and the Executive Director of the United Nations Association of the Dominican Republic, Pilar Sandoval. Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE) and the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology (SEESCyT for its Spanish initials) also collaborated in the organization of the event.
