GFDD/FUNGLODE launched Interndom: Internships in Dominican Republic
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, March 8, 2006.
Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD)
and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), with the
collaboration of the Interamerican University (UNIBE
for its Spanish initials), and the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and
Technology (SEESCyT
for its Spanish initials), among other partners, launched Interndom:
Internships in Dominican Republic, at FUNGLODE Auditorium in Santo Domingo,
March 8, 2006.
During the event, GFDD Executive Director, Natasha Despotovic, formally
presented the program to a wide audience of authorities in education, NGOs
and education organizations representatives, and distinguished
entrepreneurs. Alicia Alonzo, Interndom coordinator, explained the main
purposes and details of the Program.
Interndom is an internship program in the Dominican Republic, in which
students from any part of the world will have the opportunity to achieve
professional experience in a Dominican organization related to their field
of study. Interns will also have the opportunity to improve their Spanish
skills while they enroll in an intensive course at a local university.
Participants in the Interndom program will be able to co-validate and
transfer credits to their school back home, and, by taking the Spanish
course, will have the possibility to obtain the DELE (Diplomas of Spanish as
a Foreign Language), the official accreditation of the Spanish language
fluency degree. A second phase of the project will allow Dominican students
to do an internship abroad and improve their foreign language skills.
Other partners of GFDD/FUNGLODE in this first
edition of Interndom are the Interamerican University (UNIBE),
the Americas Technological Institute (ITLA),
Centro León,
Grupo Punta Cana,
the National Association of Hotels and Restaurants (ASONAHORES),
Community Development Foundation (FUDECO), the United Nations Association of
the Dominican Republic (UNA-DR),
Ofinet,
Publicis, Hogar Villa
Bendición, among others.
Between eight and twelve senior students from the United States and Canada
will participate in the first edition of Interndom, improving their Spanish
skills while involving themselves in 6-to-12 week internships in the
collaborating Dominican organizations.
This program is part of GFDD commitment on fostering exchange and
collaboration across nations.
