Fernando Henrique Cardoso speaks at the XII Lecture of the Americas
transmitted by GFDD/FUNGLODE
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, March 31, 2006.
Fernando
Henrique Cardoso, former President of Brazil, was the main speaker at the
XII Lecture Series of the Americas, a program of the
Organization of
American States. Henrique Cardoso stated that the rising of leftist parties
in Latin American countries still does not represent a threat to democracy
in the region. He argued the importance of governmental institutions to
promote democratic values in each country and to satisfy every citizen's
basic needs.
In the Dominican Republic, the videoconference was transmitted in FUNGLODE's
headquarters in Santo Domingo, March 30, 2006, and was followed by a
discussion panel of local experts which included Ronald Dunlop, Brazilian
ambassador in the Dominican Republic, and Alejandro Vicini. The panel was
moderated by Bertha Santoscoy, OAS Representative in the country.
The transmission of this lecture as well as the coordination of the panel is
part of the agreement between FUNGLODE/GFDD and the OAS which aims at
promoting and supporting the OAS Lecture of the Americas in the Dominican
Republic.
