Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD), attended the United Nations Department of Public Information NGO Section (DPI/NGO) briefing which had as a main theme an Overview of the 61st Session of the General Assembly. The briefing was held October 12th, 2006, at the Dag Hammarskjöld Library Auditorium, United Nations Headquarters in New York City.

The briefing looked at the outcomes and recommendations of the general debate of the 61st Session of the General Assembly, which included the High – level Dialogue on International Migration and Development and the High – level Meeting on the Least Developed Countries.  The 61st Session of the General Assembly had the theme of “Implementing a Global Partnership for Development”.  Some of the topics discussed were how to create funding for development, situation in the Middle East, Sudan and Iran, the Peacebuilding Commission, and the creating of the Human Rights Council.

The panel of the briefing was composed of three speakers: the first one was Anwarul K. Chowdhury, High Representative for the Least Developed Counties, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States; the second speaker was Christopher Coleman, Chief, Policy Planning and Mediation Support Unit, from the Departament of Political Affairs; the third speaker was Gail Bindley – Taylor Sainte, spokeswoman for the President of the General Assembly. All speakers gave a summarized report of the topics discussed in the 61st Session of the General Assembly.

The participation of GFDD in these briefings is part of the commitment to the promotion and dissemination of information on UN activities programs. In addition to DPI/NGO, GFDD is member of several other agencies within the United Nations as an institution with Consultative Status.
