Alejandro Toledo at FUNGLODE
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic,  October 12th, 2006

The former president of the Republic of Peru, Alejandro Toledo, shared his thoughts and considerations with a select group of guests, led by the Dominican Republic President, Dr. Leonel Fernández.

President Toledo exposed the challenges he had to face during his five years at the head of a country traumatized by a turbulent 10-year dictatorship, while attempting to bring hope, stability, relieve, and confidence in their leaders to those suffering of extreme poverty, isolation and lack of any probable chance to overcome their circumstances.

During his short but intensive visit in our country, the former president expanded his acquaintance with the DominicanRepublic and had the opportunity to exchange views and opinions with some of the most prominent members of government and private sector, with whom the president shared his observations and analysis about poverty, how it can become a threat to young, frail democracies and the pressing need to overcome it by providing good quality education, health and a dignified income to the victims. The former president also emphasized and the role and responsibility of every different sector of society hast in this endeavour.

His open and candid approach facilitated a fluid and warm dialogue with the audience in a rare, cherished and personal moment. President Toledo praised the role of institutions like FUNGLODE/GFDD and their role facilitating the dialogue of important issues to the peoples of Latin America, creating a space to think, discuss, analyse, and propose eventual answers to pressing issues.

FUNGLODE/GFDD is committed to bringing to the Dominican public the most relevant figures among the academia, thinkers, politicians and researchers to share their knowledge, expertise and experience. It is our purpose to provide the general public with genuine, open and honest information that will assist the citizens in making their own opinions about global issues affecting our daily lives.
