CONFERENCE WITH JOHN B. TAYLOR, FORMER DEPUTY SECRETARY OF THE US TREASURY FOR INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS WAS TRANSMITTED IN FUNGLODE'S HEADQUARTERS
May 19th, 2005. - During this conference, which was the fifth event of the OAS Lecture of the Americas, John B. Taylor pointed out the positive outlook for the Latin American countries, which has been reflected on the recent economic growth that most of them have been experiencing. The main argument of his conference was the strong linkage between democracy and economic growth.
|
Taylor explained that after a period of economic deficit experienced during the 90’s, the Latin America region has began to experiment an economic improvement, motivated by the implementation of well defined policies. “The reason behind this good outlook for the region is a good fiscal and monetary policy”, Taylor commented. He also praised the work accomplished by the region’s central banks, including the |
Dominican Republic’s. The banks’ good work impacted on the increase of the direct foreign investment in many countries in Latin America, he said.
John B. Taylor is currently a economics professor at Stanford University and senior fellow at the Hoover Institution. Previously, Mr. Taylor occupied the position of Deputy Secretary of the US Treasure for International Relations. His main responsibilities included US foreign investment, international debt, monetary policies and currencies as well as the reform of several international institutions, such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
The videoconference was transmitted in FUNGLODE’s headquarters in Santo Domingo to a wide audience. Two renown Dominican economists Mr. Frederik Emam Zade, also General Director of FUNGLODE in Santo Domingo and Mr. Julio Ortega, economic advisor to the presidency commented the conference with the audience.
