XIII ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF THE CARIBBEAN STUDIES ASSOCIATION COUNTED WITH THE PARTICIPATION OF THE RECENTLY ELECTED SECRETARY GENERAL OF THE ORGANIZATION OF AMERICAN STATES (OAS)

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS) delivered the lecture “The Inter-American System” at the XIII Annual Conference of the Caribbean Studies Association (CSA) which took place from Monday May 30th to June 4th in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. This is the first visit that Mr. Miguel Insulza, former Foreign Minister from Chile and recently elected Secretary General of the OAS, has taken as part of his new position. Also, The President of the Dominican Republic, Mr. Leonel Fernandez delivered the inaugural speech on the first day of the Conference.

The Caribbean Studies Association (CSA) is an independent professional organization devoted to the promotion of Caribbean Studies from a multidisciplinary and multicultural point of view. The CSA - founded in 1974 by 300 Caribbean specialists - now has more than 1000 members from throughout the world. The Caribbean Studies Association is not dependent on any public or private institution.
FUNGLODE collaborated with the organization and development of the event, which focused the discussion around “The Caribbean Cooperation in the Age of Information Society”. Participants included more than 400 researchers, professors, investigators from prestigious institutions from the Caribbean States and the United States including Rutgers University, The University of The West Indies, University of the Virgin Islands, St. Thomas, University of Albany, California State University, University of Minnesota, Metropolitan College of New York, Independent Scholar, Jamaica and University of Maryland, among many others.

During the parallel sessions, experts discussed critical areas relevant to the Caribbean region. These subjects included “Economic Alternatives and their Challenges for the Caribbean Region”; “The Global Environmental Policy and its impact in the Caribbean Region”; “Cooperation and Sustainability in Education”; “Health in the Caribbean States”; “Ecological Network in the Urban Areas of the Caribbean”; “Comparative Perspectives of the Economy and Society of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic”; among others.

The collaboration of FUNGLODE is part of the institution’s efforts to support the development of academic studies in critical areas not only relevant to the Dominican Republic but also for the Caribbean region. Also, through various seminars, events and conferences FUNGLODE and GFDD aim at promoting the level of discussion and dialogue in the Dominican Republic.
