GFDD at Forum Barcelona, Virtual Educa 2004
June 16-18, 2004

The Global Foundation for Democracy and Development participated in the V International Meeting on Education, Training, and Information Technology, Virtual Educa 2004, that took place June 16-18, 2004, in Barcelona, Spain.

The event was part of the Forum Barcelona 2004, a mega conference on cultural diversity, peace, and sustainable development, taking place during five months, from May to September 2004, which has been attracting thousands of visitors from all over the world. Virtual Educa was part of the "The Role of Education and Culture in Development."

This is the third time GFDD participates in Virtual Educa, the Inter-American gathering of most prestigious institutions and individuals engaged in the use of IT in education. At this occasion, the Foundation participated with a stand in the exhibit area where its publications, CD-ROMs and DVDs were presented. The stand was organized and managed by the Foundation's Manager for Corporate Image, Ms. Rocio Pichardo.

June 18, Ms. Natasha Despotovich, Executive Director of GFDD in the United States, made a presentation on the development and results of the research project "The Dominican Republic: Readiness for the Networked World", conducted in cooperation with the Center for International Development at Harvard by Mr. Geoffrey Kirkman. The presentation raised great interest and the book produced with this research, was distributed among the audience.

President Leonel Fernandez is a Honorary Committee Member of Virtual Educa, which Honorary Presidency is held by His Majesty, the King of Spain. GFDD is an institutional member of the Virtual Educa Network and, as of this year, also part of the Virtual Education International Association (VEIA), --Asociacion Internacional Virtual Educa (ASIVE)-- an international organization dedicated to "promote innovation in education, considering training as the change agent to social progress, and cooperation as the formula for development."

Virtual Educa 2004 also provided the opportunity to establish collaboration agreements and joint program activities with similar institutions, among which are Global Development Learning Network, World Bank; Nova University, Florida, U.S.; Polytechnic University of Catalonia, Spain; and CREAD.
