X LECTURE OF THE AMERICAS FORESEES PROMISING FUTURE FOR CHINA-LATIN AMERICAN AND CARIBBEAN RELATIONS
Santo Domingo December 8, 2005

"Stable trade growth, broader mutual investments and more experience-sharing are among important ways to boost relations between China and those countries of Latin America and the Caribbean region" confirmed H.E. Cheng Siwei, Vice President of the National Congress of the People's Republic of China, speaking on "China and Latin America and the Caribbean: A Promising Future" on the tenth lecture of the Organization of American States (OAS)'s Lecture Series of the Americas.

The broadcast included a welcome message of OAS Secretary General José Miguel Insulza. Cheng Siwei said in his keynote presentation at the conference that he remains "fully confident in the future of our cooperation" and urged continued discussions between his country and Latin America and the Caribbean , in a proposal to further develop economic and trade ties.

Mr.Cheng, also head of the China-Latin America Friendship Association, addressed that the OAS sub-region of countries and China should "keep tapping the potential" of mutual assistance and cooperation, broaden mutual investment, "and strive to become each other's major investment destination in the not-too-distant future." He also suggested stronger mutual communication to address any trade frictions. "It is important that disputes are approached and addressed through different channels, including the political, economic and diplomatic ones and at multiple levels such as government, enterprise and intermediaries in accordance with WTO rules," he said, referring to the World Trade Organization.

Recently, the trade volume between China and Latin American and Caribbean countries has been growing at an annual rate of 38%; by the end of 2004, exports and imports together totaled some US$40 billion. China is encouraging its investors to invest and develop businesses abroad, under its "go global" strategy.

As part of an agreement among FUNGLODE and its sister organization in the United States, Global Foundation for Democracy and Development, GFDD, and the OAS, the presentation was broadcast from the auditorium at FUNGLODE in Santo Domingo and was followed by a lively discussion among the public and the members of a panel led by Rosa Ng, Executive Director of Flor para Todos and Director of the China Town Project in Santo Domingo (located at Avenida Duarte), and Zhao Peixao, Director for Trade at the Trade Development Office of the People's Republic of China.
