XXIII MODEL OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE ORGANIZATION OF AMERICAN STATES FOR UNIVERSITIES (MOEA) LAUNCHED IN SANTO DOMINGO
Santo Domingo, December 7, 2005

The Organization of American States (OAS), the Ministry of Higher Education, (SEESCyT for its acronym in Spanish), the United Nations Association of the Dominican Republic (ANURD,) Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE,) and Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) launched the "XXIII Model of the General Assembly of the Organization of American States for Universities (MOEA)". The event was headed by President Dr. Leonel Fernández, Secretary of Higher Education Ligia Amada Melo, Irene Kingler, Director of the Department of Communication and International Relations of the OAS, and Pilar Sandoval, Executive Director of the United Nations Association of the Dominican Republic.

The XXIII MOEA will be held March 5-10 2006 at the Hotel Renaissance Jaragua in Santo Domingo , and is expected to gather several hundred college students from Dominican Republic and other member countries of the OAS.

During the launching event, Kingler highlighted the transcendence of these models, which the OAS has been holding since 1980 and emphasized that this simulation is a very effective tool to publicize the role of the OAS as it is also a dynamic way to get acquainted with the political and economic realities of the Hemisphere, as well as the use of diplomacy in pursuit of peace and support of collaboration among its countries.

The event also counted with the participation of Enma Sanz, a Dominican college student who was part of a recent OAS model in Washington D.C. She expressed the importance of the experience and the great value of the knowledge acquired.

Pilar Sandoval also pointed out the great expectations that the XXIII MOEA has created in the country, and thanked President Fernández for his support to this project. She indicated that the model is going to be done in two languages and that very soon all other details and requirements to participate would be announced.
