FIRST INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT SERVED AS THE CATALYST FOR FUTURE PROJECTS AND INITIATIVES FOR THE CARIBBEAN

"Environment: Our Partner in Development, The First International Conference on Environmental and Sustainable Development" took place in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic from August 10 th to 12 th and counted with the attendance of more than 200 international delegates from the public, private and civil society sectors from across the Caribbean, Central and South America, the Pacific, the United States and Europe. The conference served as a useful platform to concretize future projects and initiatives, and extract important conclusions in areas related to the environmental and sustainable development of the Caribbean.
The international conference, coordinated by FUNGLODE from the Dominican Republic, GFDD from the U.S., Universidad del Turabo from Puerto Rico and the Université Quisqueya from Haiti with the support of Counterpart International and National Geographic, gathered renown international experts and intellectuals in the area of sustainable development, environment and commerce from the Caribbean, Central America, United States and Oceania. The conference' sessions provided the opportunity to share experiences and best practices in areas related to the environmental and sustainable development. The sessions covered areas such as the UN Development Goals, environmental disasters and its impact on sustainable development, coastal zones and biodiversity, tourism and geotourism, trade and commerce, urbanization, renewable energy, among many others.

The event served as the catalyst for the planning of concrete programs in key critical areas of environmental management and sustainable development, promoting the formation of multi-sectorial and multi national alliances. Also, the conference allowed to raise public visibility and understanding of topics and challenges in the area of environmental and sustainable development through the participation of a group of international journalists, as part of Counterpart International's Caribbean Media Exchange (CMEx) program.
