GFDD participated at the State of the
Planet 06 forum at Columbia University
GFDD/FUNGLODE presented 'The Silent Killer'
On March 24, 2006, Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD)
and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), with the
collaboration of Americans for Informed Democracy (AID), presented
'The Silent Killer' , a powerful one-hour documentary on the
unfinished campaign against global hunger, followed by a discussion
panel of international and national experts.
GFDD/FUNGLODE signed agreement with the
Canadian Foundation for the Americas, FOCAL
On March 16, 2006, Global Foundation for
Democracy and Development (GFDD), and its sister organization in the
Dominican Republic, Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE),
signed a 5-year agreement on technical cooperation, diplomatic and
international matters, and professional trainings and research
projects, with the Canadian Foundation for the Americas, FOCAL.
GFDD at the United Nations DPI/NGO Section
weekly briefing on The Monterrey Consensus
On March 23, 2006, Global Foundation for
Democracy and Development (GFDD), represented by Maria Victoria Abreu,
participated in the weekly briefing meeting of the United Nations
Department of Public Information, NGO Section (UN DPI/NGO), which
focused on The Monterrey Consensus and the United Nations Development
Agenda.

The economist Jeffrey Sachs sees investment
in education as the key to development in the XI Lecture Series of the
Americas
The economist Jeffrey Sachs, Director of The
Earth Institute at Columbia University and Director of the UN
Millennium Project and Special Advisor to the UN Secretary General,
Kofi Annan, on the Millennium Development Goals, was the guest of the
XI Lecture Series of the Americas.
UTEMVirtual grants free access to its
Distance Education Drweb Platform to the Dominican Ministry of Basic
Education
As a result of the many partnerships and
alliances developed during the International Week on Distance
Education, organized by FUNGLODE/GFDD in Santo Domingo, February
13-17, 2006, one of the participating institutions, Metropolitan
Technological University, UTEM Virtual for its Spanish initials,
donated the Dominican Ministry of Basic Education with free access to
the Drweb platform.
GFDD/FUNGLODE launched Interndom:
Internships in Dominican Republic
Global Foundation for Democracy and Development
(GFDD) and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), with
the collaboration of the Interamerican University (UNIBE for its
Spanish initials), and the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and
Technology (SEESCyT for its Spanish initials), among other partners,
launched Interndom: Internships in Dominican Republic.
GFDD/FUNGLODE held lecture on OAS: Present
and Future of the Hemisphere
OAS representatives addressed a wide audience
on the Present and Future of the Hemisphere, on a discussion panel
held at FUNGLODE auditorium on March 6, 2006.

Organization of American States opened in Santo Domingo

General, José Miguel Insulza opened the XXIII Model General Assembly
of the Organization of American States, held in Santo Domingo, March
5, 2006.

Fernando
Henrique Cardoso, former President of Brazil, was the main speaker at
the XII Lecture Series of the Americas, a program of the Organization
of American States. Henrique Cardoso stated that the rising of leftist
parties in Latin American countries still does not represent a threat
to democracy in the region. 
On March 28-29, 2006, Global Foundation for Democracy and Development
(GFDD) participated in the "State of the Planet 06: Is Sustainable
Development feasible?" forum, held by The Earth Institute, at the
Roone Arledge Auditorium, Alfred Lerner Hall, Columbia University, New
York City.
