Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, from August 10th to 12, 2005CIEMADeS First International Conference is being coordinated by FUNGLODE from the Dominican Republic, GFDD from the U.S., Universidad del Turabo from Puerto Rico and the Université Quisqueya from Haiti. These three institutions integrate the International Center for Environmental and Sustainable Development Studies (CIEMADeS, for it Spanish acronym) which was created on November 2004 to develop professional and technical training, conduct scientific research, develop sustainable development programs, and promote environmental social consciousness. The conference also counts with the collaboration of key international allies such as Counterpart International and National Geographic as well as other partners from the private and public sectors from the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Objectives:
- Share experiences, knowledge, strategies and resources that have been proven effective in promoting sustainable environmental practices in island states;
- Raise awareness of the environmental issues that commonly affect the Caribbean states and other island states; and,
- Promote the formation of alliances among government, civil society, private sector and academia. Expected Results:
- Raise public visibility and understanding of topics and challenges in the area of environmental and sustainable development;
- Consolidation of strategic multisectorial and multinational alliances;
- Define lines of action to plan combined projects in the areas of common interest for the island states;
- Develop a joined declaration identifying critical areas and outlining concrete next steps for action; and,
- Expand the International Center for Environmental and Sustainable Development Studies (CIEMADeS) by incorporating with interested institutions. More information >>
