  • New York Applauds the US Premiere of Director Archie Lopez’s “Luis”

    The most recent production by Dominican film director Archie López, Luis, had its premiere in the United States on May 15 in the Walter Reade Theater at The Film Society of Lincoln Center in New York before a packed auditorium. The premiere included the presence of GFDD/Funglode president, Dr. Leonel Fernández, and Dr. Margarita Cedeño de Fernández, vice president of the Dominican Republic, as well as businessman Manuel Corripio, Dominican producer and director Archie López, producer Desiré Reyes and part of the premiered movie’s cast.

  • Dominican Productions Woodpeckers and Jeffrey, Award Winners at the Havana Film Festival in New York

    The Dominican films Woodpeckers (Carpinteros) and Jeffrey received awards in the eighteenth edition of the New York Havana Film Festival, an internationally recognized competition that celebrates Latin American film. Thanks to the support of GFDD/Funglode’s Dominican Film Showcase and the Dominican Republic’s General Directorate of Film (DGCINE) both productions were screened in New York between March 30 and April 7, accompanied by their respective directors, José María Cabral and Yanillis Pérez. Both productions won awards: Best Director went to José María Cabral for Woodpeckers and an Honorable Mention from the jury was given to Jeffrey.

  • Sweet! The Life Story of a Dominican Pitcher Screens at the DR Embassy

    The last GFDD’s Dominican Film Showcase Embassy Edition of 2016 screened the film ‘Sugar’, a sports drama directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, that follows the story of Miguel Santos, a. k. a. Sugar, a Dominican pitcher from San Pedro de Macorís, struggling to make it to the big leagues and pull himself and his family out of poverty. Gretchen Pockels, Cultural Attaché from the Embassy of the Dominican Republic in the United States, and María Victoria Abreu, DREFF Programming Director, introduced the film and accompanied the audience gathered at the Embassy.

  • New York Welcomes a New Edition of the Dominican Film Showcase with Action

    The Dominican Film Showcase, an initiative of Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD), returned to New York City last night, and it did so with the action film Código Paz, by filmmaker Pedro Urrutia. One of the stars, Héctor Aníbal, traveled from the Dominican Republic to share the evening with the public and the staff of GFDD at the Symphony Space on Broadway in New York.

    In closing its successful series, the Dominican Film Showcase in Washington DC chose “Los Fabulosos Má Mejores” a children’s comedy that not only makes us laugh but also transmits a valuable message of hope and perseverance for adults while encouraging reflection. As part of its premiere in Washington DC on November 4th at the Art Museum of the Americas (AMA), the film’s director Carlos Manuel Plasencia and its producer Celinés Toribio were in attendance at the excellent event. The movie played to a full house of people of all ages who share an avid interest in seeing the best and latest Dominican productions made available in the nation’s capital.

  • A Cry for Freedom, Love and Justice: “Flor de Azúcar” Wins Over Audience in Washington DC at it US Premiere

    It was truly a night to remember. The US premiere of veteran film director Fernando Báez’s Flor de Azúcar (Sugar Fields) at the opening night of the Dominican Film Showcase in Washington DC turned into a tribute to Dominican film, Dominican women and one of the best Dominican writers of all time, Juan Bosch…and of course, Fernando Báez himself. In addition, other pleasant news emerged: Flor de Azúcar has been shortlisted as a nominee for Best Foreign Film at this year’s Academy Awards, a milestone in Dominican and Latin American film history.

    GFDD’s Dominican Film Showcase will be screening a wonderful selection of Dominican films in collaboration with the Dominican Republic Embassy in the United States. The quarterly program of the Dominican Film Showcase Embassy Edition, started with the first screening on March 1, 2016 in Washington, DC, with the film ‘No hay más remedio’ screened to a wonderful audience that attended the invitation and enjoyed the movie. The welcoming remarks were presented by Ligia Reid, Cultural Attaché at the Embassy of the Dominican Republic in Washington, and María Victoria Abreu, GFDD’s International Affairs and Socio-Economic Development Program Manager. They also explained the details of this initiative that is the product of a close collaboration between the two entities and thanked Dominican Republic Film Commission (DGCINE for its acronym in Spanish) for their support.

    Before a full house the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and its sister organization in the Dominican Republic, Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (Funglode), inaugurated the Dominican Film Showcase (DFS) in Washington,D.C on Wednesday, November 19, 2014 with the presentation of the docudrama La Montaña, directed by Tabaré Blanchard and IvánHerrera. This event marked the beginning of a program that will run in the capital of the United States until Sunday, November 23. The Co-director of the film, Iván Herrera, traveled from the Dominican Republic to participate in a Q&A session with the audience, at a forum held after the film screening.

The opening night film on May 21 will showcase an action drama entitled “Biodegradable”, followed the next day, May 22, by an inspiring documentary “The Mountain”.     The first edition of the 2013 Dominican Film Showcase Program came to greet the New York public in City College of New York, CUNY on March 21-22, 2013. During this interactive event, GFDD was pleased to present the Dominican Republic under a constructive and engaging light introducing it through the work of accomplished Dominican filmmakers, Fernando Baez, Leticia Tonos and Freddy Vargas. The featured films included; El Rey de Najayo, Los Rostros Detrás de las Muñecas and La Hija Natural.     A Dominican movie made with the support of several institutions including GFDD andFUNGLODE, has made it to the list of official Oscar entries of Best Foreign Film submissions. “Love Child” (La Hija Natural), written and directed by Dominican Republic’s first female director, Leticia Tonos, has been selected to represent the Dominican Republic at the 84th Academy Awards in 2012.
