Kofi Annan Visits FUNGLODE
Santo Domingo, 8/4/2006

The Secretary General for the United Nations Kofi Annan, arrived at the FUNGLODE headquarters in Santo Domingo to discuss “The United Nations and Development: Priorities for the Millennium.” He added that the Dominican Republic is a “source of inspiration for the international community and an example to the developing world.”

Mr. Annan was invited by the United Nations Association of the Dominican Republic, Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE) and by its sister organization in the U.S., Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) During his visit to the Dominican Republic, the Secretary General also met with President Leonel Fernández at the National Palace to discuss the country’s progress in accomplishing the Millennium Development Goals laid out by the United Nations, which aim to halve extreme poverty, halt the spread of HIV/AIDS and provide universal primary education, all by the target date of 2015.

FUNGLODE hosts and sponsors the United Nations Association of the Dominican Republic (ANU-DR,) founded by President Leonel Fernández.  FUNGLODE/GFDD are affiliated to several agencies within the UN system with Consultative Status. This means that they have the privilege to form part of a very small number of NGOs in civil society who can address governments in the institution. FUNGLODE/GFDD have been supporting several of the UN programs working with its different agencies both in the U.S. and with the office of the UN Representative in the Dominican Republic.

InteRDom student, Alexandra Hinojosa, who for the past two months has been carrying out her internship at the United Nations Association for the Dominican Republic, had the opportunity to meet with Kofi Annan and President Fernández when they visited the Association’s offices in the capital.
