National Climate Change Awareness Program: Translating Science into Action
Santo Domingo, May 31, 2007

The Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD), together with its sister organization in the Dominican Republic, Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), and the Ibero-American University (UNIBE), launched the National Climate Change Awareness Program: Translating Science into Action.

The initiative was the final stage of GFDD and FUNGLODE’s Climate Change Week which took place in FUNGLODE’s auditorium in Santo Domingo.

Translating Science into Action is specifically aimed at teachers, professors, students, environmental and youth groups, as well as individuals interested in learning more about the impact of global warming and raising awareness about climate change in their communities.

Dr. Paola Tineo, head of UNIBE’s Ecological Group, introduced the program to representatives of community and youth organizations and the educational sector, and addressed the program’s objectives:

  1. To bring together key groups that have a keen interest in raising awareness about climate change (teachers, professors, students, youth groups, NGOs, etc.)
  2. To build capacity, and promote awareness-raising activities in local schools, universities, community centers, etc.
  3. To formally introduce the theme of climate change within the educational agenda
  4. To distribute an educational packet regarding climate change and global warming
  5. To form a network of educational groups and organizations interested in climate change issues

GFDD and FUNGLODE invite all groups and organizations that wish to take part in this initiative to register online to receive the Translating Science into Action educational packet.
The packet contains the following information:

  1. A play for young people
  2. A leaflet including the results of the 4th Inter-Governmental Report on Climate Change (IPCC)
  3. PowerPoint presentations
  4. A list of academic alternatives
  5. How you can reduce your carbon emissions
  6. How to plant a tree “correctly”
  7. A Green Directory
  8. Documentaries on climate change
