GFDD and FUNGLODE Present Second Conference on Climate Change
Santo Domingo, August 15, 2007

Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE) will be organizing the Second Conference on Climate Change: “Evidence of Global Warming in the Dominican Republic.” The conference will take place August 22-23, 2007 at the FUNGLODE Auditorium in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

The conference seeks to: increase public awareness and spark collective action; enable multi-stakeholder participation and dialogue; gather and systematize climate data available in the country; disseminate information to climate change professionals and policy makers; identify research gaps; bring together climate change professionals to asses regional capacity in order to better manage the impacts of climate change; and promote research and monitoring of climate change in the Dominican Republic.

Presentations will center on the following themes: Climate and Economy; Temperature Rise and El Niño; Drought; the Impact of Global Warming on Coastal and Forrest Resources; Coral Bleaching; Desertification; Biodiversity; and Increased Prevalence of Dengue and Malaria.

On Wednesday, August 22, at 7:00 p.m. GFDD and FUNGLODE will present “Live Experiences,” a compilation of video testimonials that bear witness to the impacts of global warming in the Dominican Republic. Following the video presentation, Jaime Echeverría, Environmental Economist of the Tropical Science Center in San José, Costa Rica, will deliver the keynote address: “The Importance of Monitoring and the Economics of Climate Change.”

On Thursday, August 23, presentations will take place between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Antonio Cocco Quezada, President of the CODIA Chapter of Natural Disasters, will give the keynote speech: “Climatology in the Dominican Republic: Relevance for a Sustainable Future.”

The second day of the Climate Change Conference will feature presentations by the following climate experts: Moisés Álvarez of the Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña; Caridad Perez and Juana Sille of the National Office of Meterology; Michela Izzo of the UNDP Small Grants Programme, the Dominican Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, and the Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña; Alejandro Herrera-Moreno of EcoMar; Rubén Torres of Reef Check; Frank Rodríguez of the National Institute for Hydro Resources (INDRHI); Ernesto Reyna of the Dominican Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources; Alberto Sánchez of the UNDP Small Grants Programme; Lisette Gil of the Asociación Romana-Bayahibe; Sixto Inchaustegui of the UNDP; and David Joa of the Center for Tropical Diseases.
