Washington, D.C. Was the Setting for Discussing the Benefits of the New Film Law in Dominican Republic

Dominican Film Experts Participated in the Panel, as Part of the Dominican Film Showcase.

With the participation of renowned experts from the Dominican film industry the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD), and in collaboration with the Dominican Republic Film Commission (DGCINE, by its Spanish initials), presented the panel "The Film Industry in the Dominican Republic as an engine of socio-economic
development"
, on Thursday, November 20, 2014 at GFDD offices in Washington, D.C., as part of the Dominican Film Showcase (DFS).

Boni Guerrero Canto, Legal Manager of DGCINE; Laura Castellanos, Dominican lawyer specializing in film industry and Co-Producer of La Montaña and Dominican film Directors Fernando Baéz, Iván Herrera and Ronni Castillo participated in the conference, which was part of the events celebrating the DFS
in the nation’s Capital.

Natasha Despotovic, Executive Director of GFDD, moderated the panel with a special word of “thanks to the distinguished speakers for accepting GFDD’s invitation to participate in this forum, which aims to further promote the Dominican film
production in the Dominican Republic and beyond”.

The expert’s discussed the contributions of the Law for the Promotion of Film Activity No. 108-10 and the development of the film industry in the country. The conversation featured perspectives and experiences of some authorities in the field, as well as a talk with renowned Dominican
filmmakers.

At the end, the guests enjoyed a light lunch and refreshments, where they were able to
socialize with the panelists as well as other guests, including Ligia Reid, Cultural Attache for the Embassy of the Dominican Republic in the United States, David Ndogmo, Ambassador’s Assistant, Permanent Observer for the Mission of Spain to the Organization of American States (OAS), and Jean-Paul Polo, Producer and Director of Hispanic Content Division for Pixel Studios, among others.

The festival continues through Sunday, November 23 with the screening of
films each day.

With the Dominican Film Showcase GFDD-Funglode aims to present a sample of the best films produced recently in the DR, by Dominican filmmakers, about Dominican topics, with the intention of capturing a well-rounded and positive view of the country. The objective of these screenings and subsequent discussion with the film’s makers affords an opportunity to correspond with the creative individuals behind the subjects and characters depicted in the
films.
