10th Annual CILA 2014 Was Launched

The Dominican Association of the United Nations (UNA-DR), Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), and its sister institution in the United States, Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD), officially launched the 10th annual International Conference of the Americas (Conferencia Internacional de Las Americas) (CILA 2014).

The launching ceremony took place at the Salón Salomé Ureña of the
Central Bank of the Dominican Republic, and was attended by students and professors of secondary and higher education of the public and private sector in the country, as well as renowned local journalists. Mrs. Catherine Florentino, Programs and Recreational Activities Coordinator at FUNGLODE, Alejandra Valerio, Educational Programs and Simulations Manager at UNA-DR, and Mrs. María Hernández, Vice President of the Educator’s Board of Advisors for the United Nations (CENU),
were among the specials guest of the evening.

Emil Chireno, Executive Director of UNA-DR, in the welcoming remarks thanked the audience for supporting the event and gave a brief description of CILA 2014. He also provided details about the new features of this year’s CILA. A video showing the most important circumstances of CILA 2013 was displayed, as well as the promotional video of CILA 2014 and the list of improvements achieved.

Angel
González, Secretary General of CILA 2014, was the key speaker of the event. In his speech, he insisted that students should trust their ambitions, believe in their full potential and give everything in order to achieve their dreams. He emphasized the importance of academic preparedness as an important basis in all aspects of life and invited them to be part of the history made at the United Nations Model Sessions and CILA 2014.

Moisés Javier, a student from the
Politécnico Marco Evangelista ADON, received a scholarship to participate in CILA 2014 after he answered correctly all random questions asked to the participating students.

This launching event was made possible thanks to the hard work and coordination from Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNDLOGE) and Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD).

About CILA 2014
The International
Conference of the Americas (Conferencia Internacional de Las Américas) (CILA 2014) is a student event that focuses on recurrent global issues in Latin America and the Caribbean. This year, the 10th CILA will be celebrated from Wednesday October 29th until Sunday November 2nd, at the Convention Center of the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. CILA 2014 (www.cila2014.com) will bring together 1,500 young people from different parts of the world, working in a diplomatic and cooperative atmosphere to attain viable solutions to help solve some of the most important threats faced by the international community.

There will be 18 simulations of United Nations commissions
as well as from other multilateral institutions, both regional and international. Seminaries, conferences, workshops and exhibitions, as well as social and cultural activities related to the United Nations’ agenda, will also be on the schedule. All events will be in Spanish, English and French.
