Celebrating Dominican Artistic Achievement – FUNGLODE/GFDD Awards: Publication Launch and Announcement of 2013 Winners

On December 5, Editorial FUNGLODE released three publications containing the winning entries of the 2012 FUNGLODE / GFDD Awards in the categories of Journalism, Novel and Essay writing. On the same day, it also announced the winners of the 2013 FUNGLODE/GFDD Awards.

The annual Awards, which are divided into two groups; Literary (short stories, non-fiction, novel, poetry and journalism) and;
 Audio visual (photography and documentary),  are an opportunity for young artists and more seasoned professionals to seize their chances at winning cash prizes, prestige and public recognition.

The 2012 winning published works are:

 i) “La realidad de los dominicanos en Puerto Rico y otros temas periodísticos (The reality of Dominicans in Puerto Rico and other journalistic topics),” winner of the FUNGLODE Rafael Herrera Journalism Award, written by
journalists Senabri Silvestre, Ángel García, Doris Pantaleón, Wanda Méndez, Lery Laura Piña and Kathia Hernández;

ii) “La filosofía y los espacios de libertad y otros ensayos (Philosophy and the areas of freedom and other essays)”, winner of the FUNGLODE Pedro Francisco Bonó Essay Award, written by Ramón Leonardo Díaz, Pauline Kulstad Gonzalez and Juan de la Cruz;

iii) “El turno
de los malos / Quisqueya Summers: experimento 65 (The turn of the wicked / Quisqueya Summers: experiment 65)’’, winner of the FUNGLODE Federico García Godoy Novel Award, by Fernando Berroa and Olivier Batista Lemaire.

A fourth publication, released earlier this year by Editorial FUNGLODE, was  “La verdadera muerte de Pedro Henríquez Ureña y otros cuentos (The real death of Pedro Henríquez
Ureña and other short stories)”, winner of the FUNGLODE Juan Bosch Short Story Award, by Fernando Berroa, Jorge Araújo y Reynaldo Disla; and Urbania, winner of the FUNGLODE Pedro Mir Poetry Award, by Luis Reynaldo Pérez.

Also on December 5, Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE) and the Global Foundation
for Democracy and Development (GFDD) announced the winners of the FUNGLODE / GFDD 2013 awards, which included the following categories; Photography; Short Film;  Documentary;  Short Stories;  Poetry, Essay writing and Journalism.

The event took place at the FUNGLODE Art Gallery, and was attended by José Rafael Lantigua, Coordinator of FUNGLODE’s Center for Cultural Studies; Catherine Florentino, Director of the FUNGLODE / GFDD Awards,
and by members of the jury.

The envelopes with the decisions were opened in the presence of Lawyer and Notary Cecilia García.

The organizers reported that a total of 226 entries were received: 100 in the category of short stories; 17 in poetry; 8 in essays; 81 photographic sets; 1 documentary and 19 news reports. The winners of the first three places in almost every category will receive cash prizes ranging from RD$50,000.00 to RD$100,000.00. The awards
ceremony will take place in January, 2014.

GFDD/FUNGLODE Awards were created with the purpose of stimulating creativity among Dominicans at home and abroad. Publishing the works is part of the prize awarded to winners.
