Dominican Students selected for U.N. Conference on Human Rights

The United Nations Association of the Dominican Republic (UNA-DR), the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and its sister institution Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE) will take part in the Ninth Annual U.N. Student Conference on Human Rights on the 30th November and 1st December 2006.

The event is being held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The main focus is the theme of Migration and Development: Challenges for Human Rights.

The conference will also discuss the U.N. Millennium Development Goals, amongst them the aim to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, to ensure environmental sustainability and also to analyze health issues, such as the fight against H.I.V./AIDS, malaria and other diseases. The theme of global participation will also be addressed.


Students participating in the conference will be following-up from the high-level talks on International Migration and Development that took place in New York on the 14th and 15th September at the 60th session of the U.N. General Assembly. At this event, the positive and negative sides of international migration and development were examined.

Candidates were nominated by their respective schools on the merits of a one-page essay on the theme: Migrant Rights. Selected candidates also had to demonstrate a strong knowledge of the English language.Students were then invited to interviews with a board of judges from the United Nations Association who selected the following people to represent the Dominican Republic for this event:
