Dr. Austin Bowden-Kirby Introduces New Coral Reef Recuperation Program

January 11, 2005

Dr. Austin Bowden-Kirby, marine scientist and world specialist in coral reefs, presented his experience gathered in several regions of the globe in his address, "Coral Reef Ecosystems and their Importance to the Environment and the Sustainable Development of Countries," at FUNGLODE’s Conference Hall in Santo
Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Dr. Bowden-Kirby stressed the competitive edge the Dominican Republic could acquire with a systematic restoration of its coral reef systems.
According to Kirby, actions taken towards reef restoration could translate into measurable gains with regard to greater volumes of sand in coastal areas, improved fishing opportunities, and increased tourism.

Dr. Bowden-Kirby directs Counterpart International’s Coral Gardens Project, which will
shortly be implemented in Punta Cana, in collaboration with the Punta Cana Foundation. The Coral Gardens Project will offer a series of workshops that will train local men and women in techniques associated with coral reforestation. The initiative will later be expanded to other parts of the country, in collaboration with GFDD/FUNGLODE.

This project is part of a joint effort involving GFDD/FUNGLODE, Counterpart International, the Ministries of Environment and Tourism, and local associations and NGOs. The purpose of the project is to stop the deforestation of the coral reefs and mangroves, restore fisheries, and mitigate the
effects of coastal erosion. In only three years, the results of this initiative have already resulted in visible coral reef expansion.
