Dr. Leonel Fernández Invited to Participate in UNESCO High-Level Debate on Friday, September 21 in Commemoration of International Day of Peace

Dr. Leonel Fernández, Former President of the Dominican Republic and President of Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), has been invited by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to participate in the high-level debate: “Contemporary challenges and approaches to building a lasting culture
of peace,” to be convened this Friday, September 21, 2012 from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm in Conference Room 3 of the North Lawn Building at United Nations Headquarters in New York City.

The event will take place on the International Day of Peace, established by the United Nations in 1981 through the implementation of resolution 36/67, to correspond with the opening of the United Nations General Assembly.  The initiative seeks to fulfill the following objectives:
foster a culture of peace through education; promote economic and social development; protect respect for human rights; ensure equality between women and men; encourage democratic participation; advance understanding, tolerance and solidarity; promote democratization of information and knowledge; foster international peace and security.

The high-level forum will also include involvement by United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon; Vuk Jeremic, Minister of Foreign
Affairs of the Republic of Serbia and President of the 67th Session of the General Assembly; Michell Bachelet, Former President of Chile and Executive Director of UN Women; Nasser David Khalili, Founder of the Khalili Collections; Wole Soyinka, Member of the High-Level Panel of UNESCO on Peace and Intercultural Dialogue; Forest Whitaker, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador; and Elie Wiesel, President of the Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity.
