FUNGLODE and GFDD to host STEM World 2014 Conference (Science Technology Engineering and Math)

January 6, 2014

Knowledge drives action, and at the STEM World 2014 Conference at FUNGLODE headquarters in Santo Domingo, there is a wealth of both to be found.

The two day conference, which takes place January 9 and 10 will feature an impressive roster of highly sought-after STEM all-stars from the fields of technology, education and government, who will be on hand to share their unique ideas and answer tough questions from gathered participants.

This
year’s conference combines a variety of formats and address the core concepts behind the STEM system of eduction including:

  • What is the STEM system and how is it applied?
  • Where has it (STEM education) been applied?
  • Why has it (STEM education) proven to be effective?
  • How can the system (STEM education) be incorporated into a K-12
    curriculum?
  • What are the subjects taught in each grade?
  • Will specific syllabus of those subjects be presented and discussed in the workshop?

The Conference Program Design
The role that STEM education plays in the economic and social development of the Dominican Republic cannot be overemphasized. The conference will highlight the reasons why STEM education is
so vital and provide audiences with a clear roadmap of how to establish such a system taking into account the following:

  • Upgrading the economy and the citizenry of the D.R. is dependent upon attracting higher-grade, STEM-based jobs and creating a workforce capable of performing those jobs.
  • To create a STEM-capable workforce, the D.R. must undertake a broad and comprehensive initiative to educate its current and future
    workforce.
  • STEM capabilities are more than traditional courses in science, technology, engineering and math – they are a new way of thinking and learning and an integration of technical skills.
  • Teaching STEM skills requires a very different approach – curriculum design, materials and teaching methods.
  • Preparing teachers to be effective STEM educators presents many new challenges.
  • Sustaining a long-term STEM
skills development program requires a comprehensive “ecosystem”.

The path that D.R. must follow will cover the full range of STEM education needs, and will require clear strategic focus, strong project management and a long-term commitment.
