June 18, 2019

The activity will take place on Wednesday, June 26, and Thursday, June 27, 2019, at Funglode with the aim of reflecting and debating on how we can and should use communication to make Dominican gastronomy a pillar of our competitiveness.

The Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (Funglode), through its initiative Dominicanaonline.org, together with Bocatips, extends an invitation to the first “Conference on Communication and Gastronomy: Multiplatform Narratives in Gastronomy and Tourism”. The event is supported by the Ibero-American Academy of Gastronomy, the Dominican Academy of Gastronomy, and ASONAHORES.

The event will be held on Wednesday, June 26, and Thursday, June 27, 2019, at Funglode. The opening talk will be given by Antonella Ruggiero Sansone, Director General of the Ibero-American Academy of Gastronomy, in a session on “Communicating for Ibero-America: The Multichannel Academy in the Service of Gastronomy,” on Wednesday, June 26, at 7 p.m.

GastroComunica is aimed at communicators, hoteliers, restaurants, tourism and gastronomy entrepreneurs, gastronomic suppliers, adjacent producers, chefs, and gastronomy and tourism students.

On Thursday, June 27, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., a variety of panels and talks will be held. The agenda covers three themed blocks, a roundtable, and a discussion group. The themed blocks are focused on the following areas: the role of communication as a tool to promote gastrotourism; branding, digital media, and gastronomy; and institutionality and gastronomy.

The talks will culminate on June 27 at 5:30 p.m. with the discussion group session on “The Chef as Ambassador of Dominican Flavor,” led by the Dominican chefs Esperanza Lithgow and Luigi Puello.

The activity will include the participation of key media figures like Reynaldo Caminero, director of the magazine Bohío News; Lady Reyes, editor of the newspaper El Día, and Evelyn Betancourt of the magazine Santo Domingo Times. In addition, Miguel Calzada, president of the Caribbean Traveling Network, Salvador Batista, and Gary de Arriba will talk about audiovisual content creation for both analogue and digital media.

The creation of graphic and written content for social media will be discussed by chef and food stylist Jacqueline Henríquez and food journalist and communicator Elaine Hernández, respectively.

Institutional participants will be represented by Luis Ros, president of the Dominican Academy of Gastronomy (ADG); Bolívar Troncoso, of the Dominican Flavors Foundation; Andrés Marranzini, executive vice-president of ASONAHORES; Rafael Cabrera of the Dominican Association of Restaurants (ADERES); and Ellis Pérez, an experienced communications and Dominican Republic tourism professional.

GastroComunica will be a space to deliberate on the capacity of Dominican gastrotourism to create jobs and promote entrepreneurship, and to determine how to increase the potential of our country’s branding in the immediate future. This conference will yield new communication and promotion strategies the nation can use to continue to raise the standing of Dominican gastronomy.
