Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE) participated in the Seventeenth Session of the United Nations’ Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD), May 4-15, 2009 at UN Headquarters in New York City. The purpose of the session was for governments to negotiate
the Chairperson’s Draft, which was compiled based on the dialogues that took place between Member States and Major Groups (Non-Governmental Organizations, Women, Children and Youth, Indigenous People, Local Authorities, Workers and Trade Unions, Business and Industry, Scientific and Technological Community, and Farmers) during the Inter-Governmental Preparatory Meeting that took place February 23-27, 2009 (see article on Inter-Governmental Preparatory Meeting).

The Commission’s 2008-2009 program of work

Key points addressed by stakeholders during CSD-17 included: food and water security; poverty eradication; access to quality education, training and healthcare services; climate change mitigation and adaptation; environmental degradation; environmental preservation; ecosystem services; sustainable land-use and agricultural output; renewable energy; job creation; technology transfer
and extension services; capacity programs for vulnerable groups; water productivity and management; sanitation; infrastructure investment; price controls; market access; financing; and women’s empowerment.

The draft negotiation process, scheduled to conclude May 12,
