GFDD and FUNGLODE Will Organize National Meeting on Marine Mammals in the Dominican Republic

Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE) are organizing a National Meeting on Marine Mammals in the Dominican Republic, to take place Monday, June 29, 2009 at FUNGLODE headquarters in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The day-long program will begin at 9:00 am and will consist of a scientific work meeting
followed by a panel discussion, both of which will include the participation of national and international experts.
 The objective of the event is to raise awareness of the threats facing whale, dolphin and manatee populations that reside in the waters off of the Dominican Republic today and to present and promote research and projects related to these marine
species. The National Meeting will also underscore the economic importance of marine mammals and ecotourism and advocate the need for comprehensive conservation policy and safe methods of monitoring and data collection.
The work meeting will be divided into the following thematic sessions:
·         Scientific research and conservation of whale populations in the Dominican Republic
·         Research and protection of dolphins in the Dominican Republic
·         Current state of manatees in the Dominican Republic
·         Conservation of marine mammals in the Dominican Republic
·         Promotion of environmental conservation through education on whales and dolphins
·         Non-lethal use of marine mammals
·        
Tourism linked to whales and dolphins in the Dominican Republic
