GFDD and FUNGLODE Will Organize Panel on Gold Mining at United Nations Headquarters in New York City

Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), in partnership with South-South News, Barrik and the Council on Hemispheric Affairs, will coordinate the panel “Global Perspectives on Gold Mining: Evaluating Potential and Constraints,” to take place Tuesday, May 3,
2011
from 1:15 pm to 2:45 pm at UN Headquarters in New York City in Conference Room 7 in the North Lawn Building.

The panel will feature presentations by the following international specialists: Benjamin Peachey, Communications Director, International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM); Octavio Lopéz, General Director of Mining, Office of Mining, Ministry of Industry and Commerce of
the Dominican Republic; Manuel Bonilla, President, Pueblo Viejo Dominicana Corporation, Barrick; Zoe Amerigian, Researcher, Council on Hemispheric Affairs.

Speakers will discuss the potential and constraints of the gold mining sector in relation to the achievement
of national economic and social objectives and environmental sustainability.

Topics that will be assessed during the panel include:

  • International performance standards and assessment
  • Environmental impact (biodiversity, land degradation, water safety)
  • Human health and safety
  • Socio-economic potential
  • Innovative new technologies designed to lessen
    environmental affects
  • Corporate social responsibility
  • Need for effective management of revenue flows in order to advance national and international sustainable development goals

Presentations will reflect specifically on experiences from the Dominican Republic and Colombia.
