GFDD Approved for Association with United Nations Department of Public Information

September 25, 2013

On September 11, 2013, the UN Non-Governmental Organizations Committee announced the approval of Global Foundation for Democracy and Development for association with the Department of Public Information (DPI).

The DPI was established in 1946 to promote global awareness and understanding of the work of the United Nations through radio, television, print, Internet and video-conferencing – all media tools the GFDD possesses and has honed over the years
through its numerous projects.

The DPI’s mission of interacting and partnering with diverse audiences and building support for peace, development and human rights are in keeping with and have guided and inspired the GFDD. The Foundation looks forward to focusing a portion of its publications and information activities on the work of the UN, while cooperating with UN Information Centers to meet mutual goals and objectives.

This news follows
close on the heels of the confirmation in July 2013, within the framework of Substantive Session of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) held in Geneva, that  the Foundation was officially granted special consultative status with ECOSOC. At the same time, Fundación Global Democracia y Desarollo (FUNGLODE), its sister organization in the Dominican Republic, was reclassified and upgraded from special consultative status to general consultative status.

This
recognition and heightened roles of GFDD and FUNGLODE reflect a considerable achievement of the Foundations’ ongoing work with the United Nations.  Through these important partnerships with the UN and others in the NGO community, the Foundations hope to continue making a difference in the world as they collaborate with like-minded institutions.
