June 30, 2025

With the presence of Dr. Leonel Fernandez, former president of the Dominican Republic, the 22nd Annual Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD)  Golf Tournament was recently held with great success. As in years prior, the event is held to raise funds for the Foundation, the institution chaired by the former president.

The event took place at the Miami Shores Golf Club, with the participation of 100 players, including distinguished former Major League pitchers Orlando “El Duque” Hernandez, and Jose Rijo. The awards dinner was attended by the Hon. Geanilda Vasquez, Consul General of the Dominican Republic in Miami.

In his opening statement President Fernandez thanked the sponsors and players for their support of the tournament, which this year was held as part of the 25th Anniversary activities to be held in celebration of the founding of the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development, GFDD’s sister organization.

“Your support is essential to carry out the activities carried out by GFDD, which largely focus on the educational and cultural sectors,” added Fernández.

At the same time, Jose Zaiter, Executive Director of GFDD-Florida, expressed in his welcoming remarks that this year the tournament was being held in honor of Juan Marichal, member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, who for the first time since the tournament began was not able to attend.

Finally, Ricardo Jacobo, General Coordinator of the event, thanked the organizing team Soulangel Santana, Deputy Executive Director of GFDD-Florida, Carlos Arias, Tournament Rules Coordinator, and the dynamic team of volunteers.
