GFDD/Funglode President and Representatives Participate in Annual ISTE Conference and Expo

June 27, 2018

The former President of the Dominican Republic and founder of the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development/Funglode, Dr. Leonel Fernández, participated in a variety of dynamic and educational panel discussions during the 2018 Annual ISTE Conference and Expo which took place from June 24 to 27 in Chicago, Illinois.

The International Society for
Technology in Education (ISTE) holds annual Conferences in cities around the United States , which GFDD has participated in regularly since 2006. This year’s ISTE Conference was attended by more than 20,000 teachers, school directors, superintendents, educational leaders and presenters.

The four-day conference, also attended by Natasha Despotovic, GFDD Executive Director and Yamile Eusebio Paulino, Director of the GFDD New York office, was jam-packed with panel
events and workshops designed to support educators innovate in the classroom and, more specifically, to utilize technology to enhance teaching practices.

Among the many activities included in President Fernández’ agenda was his participation in a discussion about ISTE Standards and in the inaugural presentation of the Expo on June 24, which featured the leadership of Keynote Speaker David Eagleman.

Dr. Fernández was also part of a panel
concerning ISTE International Reception, alongside the participation of Dominic Savage, Forum Director of the Education World Forum, UK and Fanny Passeport, EdTEch Coach, Mercedes-Benz International School in Pune, India.

During a LATAM VIP Guest Dinner, there was an important meeting about the specific challenges being faced in the education sector in Latin America. Dr. Fernández was an active leader in this event as well.

The involvement of GFDD in
the 2018 ISTE is the continuation of a long lasting relationship between the organization and ISTE leadership. During a meeting between the two institutions held last April at the GFDD offices in New York, ISTE CEO Richard Culatta extended an invitation to President Fernández and GFDD/Funglode representatives to participate in this year’s ISTE Conference as special guests.

At the conference in Chicago, Mr. Culatta and his organization’s executive
leadership agreed to meet once again with GFDD in September of this year in New York. The institutions plan to discuss several topics to be included in a Memorandum of Understanding that will be signed between the two parties.
