Leonel Fernández Signs Cooperative Agreement with Inter-American Bar Association

Dr. Leonel Fernández, former President of the Dominican Republic and current President of GFDD/Funglode, signed an inter-institutional cooperative agreement with the Inter-American Bar Association (IABA) for the promotion of technical and financial cooperation in forthcoming projects to be established by both institutions.

Under the terms of the agreement, cooperation between GFDD/Funglode and the IABA will consist of each organization’s support
for the other’s initiatives and mutual assistance in achieving institutional goals.

The agreement establishes various methods of institutional cooperation, such as: exchange of documents and information; exchange of specialists in the zones of cooperation; organization and execution of conferences; holding seminars and workshops; the carrying out of joint studies and research; joint publications; and
granting scholarships and training courses.

President Fernández signed the agreement on behalf of GFDD and its sister institution in the Dominican Republic, Funglode, while Jorge Hernán Rubio Carrera and María Carolina Obarrio, President and Secretary General, respectively, signed on behalf of the IABA.

During their meeting, the IABA directors honored President Fernández by certifying him as an honorary member of their professional and independent
forum, founded May 16th, 1940 to promote the exchange of professional views and information for lawyers to promote the Rule of Law and protect the democratic institutions in the Americas.

Also present during the ceremony were Acting Executive Co-Directors of GFDD Yamile Eusebio and Semiramis de Miranda. Meanwhile, Nathanael Concepción, director of Funglode’s Dominican Political Observatory, was in charge of coordination for the signing of the agreement between
the two institutions.
