Successful National Dominican Student Conference Closes at UPenn

March 29, 2015

The 9th Annual National Dominican Student Conference drew to a close on Sunday, March 29th at the University of Pennsylvania with the traditional mangú brunch and a time for reflecting on all of the friendships and professional connections created and/or edified over the weekend.

InteRDom met dozens of students interested in performing internships in the Dominican Republic, as well as partnering with the Global Dominican Academic Exchange Program to host
groups of Dominican students on their own campuses.  With a booth at the opening night registration and representatives in attendance at the Saturday evening Professionals and Alumni Mixer, InteRDom forged new connections and introduced students from universities across the United States to its programs.

The 2015 conference theme, "La Evolución De Nuestra Generación: De Dónde Venimos y Hacia Dónde Nos Dirigimos,” served as a backdrop for the 3
days’ worth of activities organized by UPenn’s Dominican Student Association, Grupo Quisqueyano, including the innovative new workshops “Do-min-i-can: Definition: UNKNOWN,” “Ferguson & the Afro-Latino Political State,” and “Mijo Pero la Biblia Dice,” on Dominican linguistics, race and politics, and generational studies, respectively.

More than 200 Dominican Diaspora students and their
friends from universities and community college across most of the Eastern Seaboard were in attendance, and delighted by the motivational speech from Dominican recording artist Maluca, who spoke of her upbringing and how to succeed despite adversity.

The National Dominican Student Conference is an annual conference that strives to provide the highest quality in educational workshops, inspirational speakers, art exhibitions, networking events, and parties – all of which
serve to educate, uplift, and unite the Dominican student community.

InteRDom, an initiative of Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), is the premier internship, research and academic study program in the Dominican Republic. It offers international students the opportunity to research important topics at the forefront of the United Nations agenda, obtain professional experience by interning with
Dominican organizations and businesses related to their fields of study and/or earn academic credits by taking courses and seminars at a local university.
