XI Educational Trip to Pico Duarte Starts with the Screening of the Documentary La Montaña

October 31, 2014

The presentation formed part of the initiatives that the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD, for its acronym in English) and its sister organization in the Dominican Republic, Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (Funglode) offers through the RDescubre program and its XI Educational trip to Pico Duarte. The film screening was coordinated with alpinist Karim Mella and his foundation Siempre Más.

The renowned
Dominican mountaineer fraternized with the public in La Cienaga, Dominican Republic on Thursday, October 30, 2014 during the screening of the documentary, a film that shows the adventure of the first Dominican expedition to reach the summit of Mount Everest in Nepal, trip where he participated.

In his welcome message Karim Mella said that “beyond the physical challenge that may be
encountered when climbing a mountain, with these activities we want to give an inspiring example that any dream or goal can be achieved with effort and motivation. Meanwhile Reydi Moreta, of GFDD staff, thanked the public for their assistance and stressed “the importance of this event in La Ciénaga, since the town stands out through the history of the film, as it is the starting point for expeditions to Pico Duarte, where guides and guarda parques make the trips possible to this
imposing mountain in the Caribbean”.

The attendees enjoyed the film screening that presents the contrast between the highest mountain in the world and the low lands of the Caribbean, as the three climbers surpass the difficult path to reach the top. At the same time, three Dominican youths, sons of a fisherman, start their own challenge in climbing the highest mountain of their island. Two parallel stories that remind us that from the sea to the sky, everyone
has a dream and their own mountain to climb.

RDescubre program aims to provide underserved students and communities with the opportunity to take part in educational expeditions all over the Dominican Republic as a way of seeing and appreciating the country’s beautiful landscapes and the wealth of its natural resources. The program helps connect youth to the environment through positive experiences and, over the long run, encourages and motivates them to become
involved in the care and protection of the environment. Through these adventures, participants are inspired to become activists in their own local communities and to work together for a common cause, while inspiring others through their experiences.
