GFDD and FUNGLODE Elaborate a Plan for the Management of the Sosúa Marine Park

November 29, 2007
Based on the methodology outlined in the World Conservation Union’s manual, “How is Your MPA Doing?,” Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD), Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), Counterpart International and the Sosúa Marine Sanctuary have elaborated a plan for the management of the Sosúa Marine Park.

The development
process was established following the realization of workshops involving major stakeholders. The four organizations responsible for developing the initial management strategy have elaborated a plan intended to ensure the sustainable use of coastal marine resources in the Sosúa Marine Park.

The plan will be implemented over a period of three years. To facilitate the implementation of the plan, qualitative guidelines have
been established, which include inspection, water-quality and waste management, zoning, habitat restoration and out-reach activities.

The Bay of Sosúa’s coastal-marine ecosystems are diverse and include beaches, rocky coastal areas, coral reefs, seagrass meadows, estuaries and mangroves. These environments are home to a large variety of endemic marine and terrestrial flora and fauna that are of both biological and
economic importance, many of which are endangered species.
