GFDD and FUNGLODE Will Premier 3 Documentary Films During International Week on Climate Change

May 16, 2007

The Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD), Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), and the Dominican Chapter of the International Center for Environmental and Sustainable Development Studies (CIEMADeS) will be hosting a week long series of events concerning climate change which will include the screening of the following documentary films: “Too Hot Not To Handle,” “The Great Warming,” and
“MicroMacro Panorama: Climate Change.”

On Monday, May 21, GFDD, FUNGLODE, and the DR Chapter of CIEMADeS, will kick off their climate change week with the free screening of two acclaimed documentary
films “Too Hot Not to Handle,” and “The Great Warming.” Film showings will begin at 5:30 pm at FUNGLODE’s auditorium in Santo Domingo. This event is open to the public.

“Too Hot Not to Handle,” an HBO documentary, which made its debut on Earth Day, April 22 2005, provides a complete and
in-depth look at global warming and its major effects in the United States. This cautionary yet compelling documentary highlights contributions from leading climate change scientists. In addition to in-depth discussions on subjects such as the greenhouse effect, hurricanes, drought, hybrid vehicles, and alternative energy sources, the film shows how businesses, local governments, and citizens are taking positive steps towards reducing global warming emissions.

“The Great Warming,” a 2006 Stonehaven production narrated by Alanis Morissette and Keanu Reeves, covers an impressive breadth of topics related to climate change including causes, implications, political context and technological advances. This documentary, filmed in eight countries, travels four continents encountering an assortment of
people- from scientists and professors, to farmers and fishermen, to youth activists and architects- whose lives have been increasingly impacted by the effects of global warming. By relating the stories of “real people,” the documentary manages to depart from purely scientific persuasion, presenting an emotional picture of our children’s planet.“

On Tuesday, May 22, GFDD, FUNGLODE, and the DR Chapter of CIEMADeS will also present the film, “MicroMacro Panorama: Climate Change,” at 7:15 pm in FUNGLODE’s auditorium, as part their International Conference on
Climate Change. “Macromicro Panarama: Climate Change,” a 2007 Television for the Environment Production, discusses the ways in which climate change is attributing to the intensity and frequency of natural disasters such as hurricanes, cyclones, and monsoons.

It also draws attention to the successful implementation of programs designed to replace fossil fuels traditionally used in motor vehicles with clean alternative fuels such as ethanol, hydrogen, electricity, and natural gas.
