GFN Award, the Oscar of Environmental Filmmaking, Hosted by DREFF 2016

August 11, 2016

The Dominican Republic Environmental Film Festival (DREFF), which celebrates this year its 6th edition from September 13 to 18, is proud to be the first to host the annual Green Film Network (GFN) Award in the Americas. The Green Award, often called the Oscar of environmental filmmaking, is now in its third edition and will announce the winning film at the end of August. The chosen film will be screened during the festival’s closing ceremony to be held on September
18.

Each GFN member will present a film chosen from their last festival and produced in their own country, showcasing the diversity and strength of environmental documentaries from around the world. An international jury representing more than 20 countries will choose the winning film to be screened at the closing ceremony of DREFF, September 18.

The GFN brings together some of the major film festivals that happen annually around the globe with focus on
environmental issues. The network´s objective is to coordinate the events of the associated festivals, promote and distribute films worldwide, and encourage initiatives and projects that help people ponder about the environment.

The 2015 GFN Green Award, hosted by the Ecozine Film Festival, in Spain, was presented to the Spanish director Nocem Collado, for her film La mujer y el agua. In 2014 it was FIFE to host the award which was assigned to the
documentary Amazon Gold, directed byReuben Aaronson.

Since 2015 DREFF is a member of GFN, which brings together more than 30 of the major environmental film festivals around the world. As a result of its affiliation with the GFN, the DREFF, an initiative of the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD), has been able to work more closely with other festivals such as Washington DC´s Environmental Film Festival, Paris’ FIFE
(France), Turin’s Cinemambiente (Italy), Cuernavaca’s Cinema Planeta (Mexico), and Buenos Aires’ FINCA (Argentina).
