Seminar on Sustainable Energy in the Dominican Republic

January 18, 2008
On Thursday, January 17th, Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE) presented the Seminar, “Opportunities for Sustainable Development in the Dominican Republic,” as part of International Week on Energy. The event culminated Friday, January 18th.

Inaugurating the Seminar,
General Director of FUNGLODE, Fréderic Emam-Zadé spoke about the history of energy, making reference to the different types of energy sources used throughout the ages, and the debates that have arisen in response to changes in the way energy is generated.

“Now we are witnessing similar situations,” declared the General Director. We always fear that our petroleum sources will run-out, and search for alternative, more sustainable solutions, and we always find new solutions that allow us to save energy or obtain greater energy output from the sources we currently utilize.” He
ascertained that these cycles cause us to reevaluate which path has the potential to ensure long-time use of sustainable energy. “But the market [for fuel] exists,” emphasized Emam-Zadé, “and many [alternative energy] projects are kept in draws until a new crisis emerges concerning the abundance and cost of petroleum.”

Dominican Secretary of Environment, Omar Ramírez,
discussed energy, climate change and environmental sustainability in the Dominican Republic.  He provided an overview of energy consumption tendencies and the climatic phenomena associated with such tendencies, as well as long-term risks to human welfare. The Secretary of Environment also argued that the country must develop a working agenda that incorporates adaptation and mitigation strategies in order to adequately address the climate crisis.

Juan Ormazábal, Director of Centro de Energías Renovables (CENER – Center for Renewable Energy) in Spain, echoed Ramírez’s concerns. He spoke about the surge of renewable energy options, and the need for the nation to develop increased reliance on alternative energy sources. He also outlined the Renewable Energy Law and the regulations affiliated with it, and urged that the law be upheld and
adhered to.
