Students Begin Internships in NYC

July 18, 2007
The six Dominican students that received scholarships from GFDD and FUNGLODE’s Global Media Arts Institute and New York University’s Opportunity Program began their studies in New York, July 9, 2007.

During the welcoming ceremony for the students, Valerie Cabral of NYU spoke of the profound impact the six week experience would have on the students’ lives, both on a professional, as well
as on a personal level. She encouraged the students to document their experiences in a journal so that they would have them to reflect upon.

Param Chawla, Director of NYU’s Opportunity Program discussed the history behind GFDD, FUNGLODE and NYU’s partnership. Two years ago, NYU professor, Irving Vincent, instructed the first course in collaboration with GFDD and FUNGLODE in Santo Domingo. As a result of the
course’s enormous success, Vincent proposed that the institutions realize other joint initiatives, among them the summer program in New York City for six scholarship recipients.

Vincent later expressed his satisfaction in being involved in a program that will undoubtedly aid in the development of the film industry and positively impact the lives of the program’s participants.

GFDD and FUNGLODE were represented at this event by GFDD Internship and Educational Projects Coordinator, Yamile Eusebio, and FUNGLODE Audiovisual Coordinator, Omar de la Cruz.

In partnership with New York University and One Race Films, the Global Media Arts Institute provides up-in-coming professionals in the television and film industry with instruction in the latest trends in audiovisual
production as part of its overall mission to expand the cinematographic industry in the Dominican Republic.
