GFDD Co-Sponsors Civil Society Special Session in Preparation for OAS General Assembly

May 3, 2006

GFDD, along with Microsoft and Hewlett Packard, co-sponsored the Civil Society Special Session held in Washington, DC May 2-3 with Civil Society and the OAS Special Session of the Committee on Inter-American Summits Management and Civil Society (CISC) Participation around "Good Governance and Development in the Knowledge-Based Society."

The purpose of the Roundtable was to exchange points of view on the
implementation and follow up the Declaration of Florida and the Declaration and Plan of Action of Mar del Plata, as well as to submit recommendations to the Draft Declaration of Santo Domingo to the consideration of the Heads of the Delegations and the General Secretariat during their discussions at the XXXVI OAS General Assembly. The dialogue will take place at the site of the General Assembly on Sunday, June 4, 2006.

The Roundtable provided the opportunity to
discuss and exchange candid and open opinions among the  OAS Member States, the General Secretariat, and an excellent representation of the civil society of the Hemisphere, on the themes that occupy their agendas, how to tackle the challenges of the region, and how their work is related to the Inter-American agenda. This working session provided evidence that the Member States, civil society organizations, and the OAS General Secretariat are interested
in working
together in the design and implementation of programs and projects that have a positive effect on the development of our region. The Recommendations from Civil Society in the Roundtable with Civil Society will be incorporated into the OAS Member States deliberations, when addressing the subject at the forthcoming OAS General Assembly.

FUNGLODE/GFDD are registered organizations to the OAS Civil Society and support several of its programs.
