Applications Now Open for the City College Summer Service Learning Program

February 11, 2013

Students from all CUNY schools interested in perfecting their Spanish language skills while immersed in the Dominican culture and providing an important service to the Dominican community need not wait any longer to download and submit their application to participate in the 2013 City College—InteRDom Service Learning Program.

The application is downloadable here, or may be picked up in a paper format at the City College Study Abroad office at NAC 5/216. While students are encouraged to apply quickly in order to be eligible for scholarship and financial aid opportunities, the application deadline is April 30, 2013.

The Service Learning 2013 program is a 4-week, 4-credit program which will allow students to take a course on Caribbean culture, history and identity,
as well as participate in a series of informational and capacitation workshops to implement an urban gardening initiative in 10 urban and semi-urban communities on the outskirts of Santo Domingo. The urban agriculture project will build on the success of the 2012 project, in which students reached 50 families in 2 communities. In 2013, the initiative has expanded, and the host organization hopes to reach upwards of 2,000 families in 10 communities.

Students will enroll
in a 4-credit summer course on service learning at City College and participate in one pre-departure urban agriculture workshop in order to prepare them for their service on the ground. The first week in the country will be focused on practices and techniques for creating urban gardens, Dominican cultural gastronomy and herbal medicine. Students will then partner with community representatives to assist community members in creating their own backyard and box gardens to grow food for their
families.

This short program with City College is an example of the special programs that InteRDom can create to accommodate the particular interests, curriculum and agendas of different universities. InteRDom works with universities to design creative programs which focus on specific areas of study, professional values or service opportunities.

The internship program,
InteRDom
, an initiative of Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), is the premier internship, research and academic study program in the Dominican Republic. It offers international students the opportunity to research important topics at the forefront of the United Nations agenda, obtain professional experience by interning with Dominican
organizations and businesses related to their fields of study and/or earn academic credits by taking courses and seminars at a local university.
