Dr. Leonel Fernández Meets the OAS Secretary General in Washington D. C. to Discuss Several Regional Issues

July 27, 2016

This Wednesday President of GFDD/Funglode, Dr. Leonel Fernández, met with Luis Almagro, Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), as part of a work agenda being carried out since last Monday in the United States. In his meeting with Almagro, the former Dominican head of state dealt with several regional issues.

As part of his institutional commitments, Fernández is attending the Philadelphia Democratic National Convention as a special guest.
Likewise, he presented the OAS permanent council with the final report on the electoral observation mission that he headed on the Constitutional Approval Referendum held this February 21 in Bolivia.

The former president of the Dominican Republic also plans to hold meetings in recognized US academic and research centers.

Fernández led the mission to observe the February referendum on changing the Bolivian Constitution to allow a new candidacy by
president Evo Morales for a fourth consecutive term. The referendum resulted in failure for Morales.

It is worth mentioning that the OAS’s electoral observation mission in Bolivia detected some irregularities during the referendum on president Evo Morales’s reelection, but the mission discarded the consideration of such irregularies as evidence of electoral fraud.
