GFDD and FUNGLODE Celebrate Baseball During Dominican Get-togethers in the Keystone State

February 11, 2013

Following on the heels of the success of the Dominican Get-togethers in the Big Apple series in New York and New Jersey,  it is now the turn of the state of Pennsylvania which has formally requested that GFDD and FUNGLODE partner with them on this unique initiative.

GFDD and FUNGLODE, in association with the Dominican Consulate of New York and in
partnership with the William Allen High School in Allentown, PA, are hosting a major league Dominican Get-together in the Keystone State on Thursday, February 28, 2013. The event, which will take place in an area well-known for its Dominican Diaspora,  will feature a presentation of the film The Republic of Baseball, and a panel discussion to follow about racism in sports with an undisclosed baseball great.

The Republic of Baseball is the story of the epic 1962 World Series as told by brave and talented Dominican stars of baseball, Felipe Alou, Juan Marichal, Manny Mota and Ozzie Virgil Orlando Cepeda & Willie McCovey The film masterfully depicts the challenges of dictatorship, poverty, and later racism, overcome by Dominican baseball legends.

The special event, with free admission and refreshments will
feature the glorious backdrop of a New Perspectives: Dominican Republic Photo Exhibit for Allentown residents to enjoy.

The Dominican Get-togethers series was created to promote a better understanding of the richness and diversity of Dominican culture; to enjoy and celebrate its prominent figures and upcoming talents; and to create a forum for reflection and discussion of topics relevant to the
Dominican community in the U.S. and at home.
