February 6, 2017

On Wednesday April 12, the New York Dominican Republic Model United Nations (NYDRMUN 2017) will accommodate 400 students in New York City as part of one of the largest model UN conferences open to youth in the western hemisphere. The event, which is co-organized by the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarollo, will run from Wednesday April 12 to Sunday April 16 and will be hosted at the Hotel Grand Hyatt, with a closing
ceremony due to be held on the final day in the General Assembly Hall of the United Nations.

Over the course of five days, the students will be given the opportunity to debate issues that appear on the UN agenda, ranging from peace and security to human rights issues. In selecting their topic of discussion, the delegates will pick from one of seven different platforms for debate: The Security Council, the Human Rights Council, the Arab League Council, the International
Court of Justice, the First Commission of the General Assembly, the Commission of Science and Technology for Development and the Press Corps.

The model UN sessions themselves will be conducted in English and in Spanish, with a final resolution vote on each UN Agenda topic being held on the final day inside the General Assembly Hall of the United Nations.

The conference will enable the students, to hone their skills in diplomacy, negotiation, critical
thinking, compromise, public speaking, writing, and research. It will also allow them to learn about how the United Nations operates from the inside, and to discuss current UN Agenda items such as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals.
