Miami, Florida – The former President of the Dominican Republic and President of the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD), Dr. Leonel Fernández, headed the closing ceremony of the 24th Funglode and GFDD Golf Tournament, held at the Crandon Golf Course in Key Biscayne, Miami.
The event brought together more than 124 players with some 300 guests participating in the annual event. Attendees included business leaders, professionals, members of the Dominican community in Florida, and other special guests.
The tournament has become one of the most traditional events organized by both institutions in the United States. Its main objective is to raise funds in order to support GFDD’s projects and programs.
During remarks delivered at the awards ceremony, Fernández highlighted that after more than two decades this tournament has become a special event that has managed to combine an important sports event with integration goals and a commitment to such development efforts such as research, education, and international cooperation programs promoted by Funglode and GFDD.
The tournament was played in a double scramble format, and divided into two categories. The overall winners were the pair comprised by Edgar Alma and Francisco Tavárez, who took the best gross score of the competition. The other winning couple, who took the best net score, was Andrés Dilonex and Leo Sánchez. In the A Category Jonathon Pavlov and Carlos Lara took first place in the gross score and, in the same category, Julio Jerez and Dorian Vargas achieved first place in the net score.
In the B Category Phillip Contreras and Jhon Hernández took the first-place trophy for the overall gross score, while Greg Denaro and Gregory Denaro earned first place net by reaching the highest score in this category.
During the awards ceremony Yovanny Marte won the Longest Drive category, and special awards were issued to players who landed closest to the pin on the course’s various greens.
With this edition, the Funglode and GFDD Golf Tournament reaffirms its role as a platform for supporting academic and development initiatives, while at the same time strengthening ties between the Dominican Republic and the international community.
