Leonel Fernández Highlights the Role of the Dominican Republic in Democratic Consolidation in Latin America During Opening Remarks at the Global Forum on Latin America and the Caribbean 2018

The President of GFDD/Funglode is leading the first Global Forum on Latin America and the Caribbean 2018, a new platform for debate and the exchange of ideas.

Today, the former President of the Dominican Republic and President of the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD/Funglode), Dr. Leonel Fernández,  led the opening event of the Global Forum on Latin America and the Caribbean 2018, a conference taking place in
New York on Wednesday, September 26 and Thursday, September 27. During his speech, the President highlighted the role of the Dominican Republic in the strengthening of democracy in the region.

In front of special guests and panelists who will present at the 2018 Global Forum on Latin America and the Caribbean, the former Head of
State emphasized that the Dominican Republic was the country which started the democratic process in the LAC region four decades ago.

Fernández stressed the need to continue working to strengthen democracy and the region’s role in the international arena for the debate and exchange of ideas, which is precisely the goal of the Global Forum on Latin America and the Caribbean 2018.

Also offering welcoming words was the Executive Director of GFDD,
Natasha Despotovic, who thanked the participants for their support of the event and Yves Leterme, the General Secretary of Idea International, who expressed gratitude for the efforts by former President Fernández and GFDD/Funglode to promote such platforms for discussion and debate.

The Global Forum on Latin America and the Caribbean is an international conference in New York where, over the course of two days, a group of 30 international experts including Heads of
States, Ministers of Foreign Relations and senior representatives from regional organizations and think tanks will hold conversations and analyze the role Latin America and the Caribbean on the world stage.

 The Global Forum on Latin America and the Caribbean 2018 is being held simultaneously with the Annual Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The international event is being held at the Union League Club of Manhattan and is organized
by GFDD/Funglode, the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA Internacional), the Institute of Latin American Studies – Columbia University, and the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).
