Leonel Fernández to Lead OAS Electoral Observation Mission in Ecuador

January 6, 2017

President of Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD), former President of the Dominican Republic, Dr. Leonel Fernández, was appointed chief of the Electoral Observation Mission (EOM) of the Organization of American States (OAS) in the general elections scheduled for February 19 in Ecuador.

The announcement was made by the Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, in an official statement where he reveals that former President Fernandez will lead a
preliminary visit to Ecuador on January 16-18 prior to the general elections scheduled for February 19.

The OAS document explains that during the preliminary visits, Fernández will hold meetings with electoral and government authorities, political parties, candidates, and representatives of Ecuador’s civil society to discuss electoral preparations.

This will be the third time that Fernández, a well-known Latin American mediator, heads an electoral observation
mission in Latin America, the first took place in Venezuela’s parliamentary elections in December 2015, where he served as UNASUR observer chief, then participated as head of the OAS Electoral Observation Mission in Bolivia’s Constitutional Referendum in February 2016.
