Maldives Ambassador to Focus on Importance of the World’s Oceans

In March, the GFDD Global Roundtable will be hosting His Excellency Ambassador Sareer of the Permanent Mission of Maldives to the United Nations to discuss the importance of oceans within the framework of the Sustainable Development. The Ambassador will be speaking from the perspective as one of the highest representatives of an island nation taking the brunt of the perilous effects of climate change.

An accomplished diplomat, Ambassador Sareer was
appointed to the Maldives Mission as Ambassador/chargé d’affaires in February 2012. A career foreign service officer, Ambassador Sareer joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in February in 1986 and served as a desk officer until February 1988. From there his career has taken him to many countries. In Colombo, Sri Lanka he served as third secretary and later counselor and deputy high commissioner at the Maldives embassy. In Kathmandu, Nepal he was appointed director of the
Secretariat of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). In Brussels, he occupied the post of chargé d’affaires at the Maldives Mission to the European Union and in London as deputy high commissioner at the Maldives. Finally, from December 2009 until his recent appointment, Ambassador Sareer served as the high commissioner of Maldives to Bangladesh.

The session will be structured as an interactive discussion between Ambassador Sareer and
GFDD’s Executive Director, Ms. Natasha Despotovic that will be streamed on The Foundations’ websites.
