April 9, 2014

The fourth edition of the Model United Nations of the Northern Region (MNURN 2014) will be held this year from April 10 – 13, at the Center for Professional Training and Innovation (CAPEX), Victor Mera Espaillat Industrial Park in Santiago de los Caballeros.

The meeting, which is organized by the United Nations Association of the Dominican Republic (UNADR) in close coordination with the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD), and its sister
organization in the DR, Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), will have the participation of over 300 students from secondary and higher education institutions in the Dominican Republic.

MNURN 2014 seeks to create an opportunity for Dominican youth to unite in an environment of diplomacy and cooperation to discuss and propose solutions to the challenges facing the international community on relevant agenda items.

The young participants
will be simulating the different UN bodies, as well as number of related multilateral, regional or international institutions that make up the UN System, including; the Security Council, the General Assembly, the Food and Agricultural Organization, among others.

This year’s wide range of issues being discussed include: telecommunications in the context of international security; role of the United Nations in the promotion of development in the
context of globalization; threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts; the continuous deterioration of the humanitarian situation in the Arab Republic of Syria; sustainable forest management; rural development; and the protection of the rights of all migrant workers and their families. (See full list of items here).

In the weeks
leading up to the the UN Model, workshops and conferences have been regularly conducted with the aim of training the youth delegates on the particular UN issues and equipping them with the skills necessary to represent the various UN organs and commissions.

Earlier in February, both Mr. Emil Chireno, Executive Director of UNA-DR and Dr. Richard Bidó, Secretary General of MNURN 2014, formally opened the logistical and academic activities at Noah Restaurant &
Lounge, in Santiago. Among the attendees were teachers, tutors, academic authorities and local journalists, who have supported the implementation of the discussion forums and the educational simulations.

Mr. Chireno gave thanks for the assistance received, not only by those attending this meeting, but for the active participation of the public and private institutions in the Northern Region.
