About Vibeke Jensen

Ms. Vibeke Jensen was appointed UNESCO Representative to the United Nations and Director of the UNESCO Liaison Office in New York effective 19 September 2013. In July 2013 she was transferred to New York from Tanzania as Director of the Secretariat of the Secretary-General’s Global Education First Initiative (GEFI).Born in 1960 in Denmark, Ms. Jensen holds a Master’s Degree from University of Copenhagen in History. She started her career in the Ministry of Labour in Copenhagen in 1987. In 1989 she joined UNESCO as assistant to the Coordinator for Women’s programs. In 1994 she was transferred as Education Program Specialist to UNESCO’s Office for the Sahel (Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger) based in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. In 1997 she moved to UNESCO’s regional office in Bangkok as girls and women’s education program officer. On leave from UNESCO, she was Education Adviser in the Ministry of Education in Kathmandu, Nepal, from 1999-2001, a multi donor education sector program. In 2001, Ms. Jensen rejoined UNESCO Bangkok as the Quality Education and Gender Program Officer. From 2004-2007, she was on secondment to UNICEF Pakistan as the Girls’ Education Specialist, and Education Section Chief at interim. In March 2007 she was nominated Head of UNESCO’s Office in Vietnam and in 2009 Director of the Cluster office in Dar es Salaam (Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles, United Republic of Tanzania).

Topic: At the end of April, the GFDD Global Roundtables will be hosting experienced education specialist, Ms. Vibeke Jensen. Ms Jensen who joined UNESCO in 1989, and today assumes the dual positions of Director of UNESCO’s New York Office and Director of the Secretariat of the UN Secretary-General’s Global Education First Initiative will sit down with GFDD to discuss the importance of education for sustainable development and its role in the post-2015 development agenda.
